G4 Racing experienced a positive weekend in the third round of the Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine at Hungaroring. Lining up on the track on the outskirts of Budapest, the Spanish squad fought for the podium before ending up fourth with Michael Belov, who was among the quickest driver throughout the weekend, from testing to qualifying and the races.
Belov was fifth overall in qualifying 1 and third in his group, only 0.009s behind the leader. In the second race, only contact with another driver prevented him from ending up in the points.
Alessandro Giusti had to play catch up during the weekend after missing the test day due to school commitments. He had to fight back to regain the time. In race 1 he recovered from P19 to P14 while he had to retire due to a crash in race 2. The next round for the series will be at the end of the month on the legendary Spa-Francorchamps track in Belgium.
Alessandro Giusti (#Driver 3): “It was not the best weekend we could have had. We could have had the pace, but the fact that I could make it to the test day before the weekend made it more difficult. It’s bitter taste, but we improved some things and the next race will be better. Thanks to the team for their job.”
Michael Belov (Driver #30): It’s been a weekend with mixed feelings. In the first part of it, our Q1 lap was competitive and we took P3 of the group, and we finished P4 very close to the podium, fighting until the last corner. On Sunday, in Q2 we were so close to the pole but we took P3, and on Race 2 I got a contact and we retired on the last lap. Thanks to the team for their amazing work.”
Adrian Muñoz (Sporting and Technical Manager): “Not the desired weekend. Our pace was there, but Qualifying sessions this year are extremely tight and a few thousands can send you already a couple of rows back. Alessandro couldn’t attend the collective pre-event test due to school exams and that compromised his weekend in a track where it’s a very difficult test during the off-season. Even with that he overcome and did his best. Michael’s previous experience on this circuit was in Formula 4, but he adapted immediately and extracted the best out of the car. Q2 was especially painful as he missed the top spot in the group by 9 thousands. Races could have brought better results but overtaking at Hungaroring is a difficult task. Next stop is Spa, which is always a good place to race.
