Bad luck for G4 Racing in Zandvoort G4 Racing exp Bad luck for G4 Racing in Zandvoort

G4 Racing experienced an unlucky weekend in Zandvoort, home to the fifth round of the 2022 Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine. The Dutch track in 2021 had seen the Swiss team conquer the first points in the series, but this year did not smile at the three drivers of the team, who failed to confirm the good growth shown in the previous rounds.

Sunday's race 2 was interrupted at the end of the second lap with a the flag, necessary following a violent accident. At the restart Owen crossed the line in 19th position, Matias was 21st, while Axel, once again in battle, finished 31st.

The next round of the Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine will bring G4 Racing to the discovery of a new circuit, as the team will race for the first time at the Hungaroring in Budapest.

Axel had a brilliant start, gaining seven positions in lap 1. In the opening stages, he had a fierce battle with two other drivers, which ultimately proved too much for his tyres. So, by lap 6 Owen overtook him, and then continued to score P17 from P24 on the grid.

Matias also managed to climb back from P26 to P20, showing a promising pace ahead of tomorrow's qualifying and race 2, while Axel eventually crossed the finish line in P25.

The first lap of race 2 was particularly hectic and chaotic and Owen was involved in a multiple contact, which put him out of contention. Matias managed to recover three positions, to cross the finish line in 23rd place, while Axel finished 25th at the end of a good comeback, in which he overtook seven cars.

The next round of the Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine is scheduled at Zandvoort, the circuit on which G4 Racing had won the first points in the category in 2021.

Coming from the prestigious event at Monte Carlo, G4 Racing came back into action at Circuit Paul Ricard in Le Castellet for the fifth round of the Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine season.

In Friday's collective test session, the Swiss squad immediately showed excellent potential on a track it knows well, having been the site of several pre-season test days. In qualifying, Owen Tangavelou and Matias Zagazeta both set the eighth fastest lap time in their group, securing P15 and P16 on the grid respectively. They were also fifth and sixth in the rookie-only standings respectively.

On his home track, Tangavelou found good chemistry and moved up to third in class after an early safety car. Tangavelou then remarkably defended his position. Although he eventually had to give up P3, he claimed his best result of the year with P14 overall, one step away from the rookie podium. Zagazeta fought hard in the middle of the pack, crossing the finish line in P18, ninth among rookies, while Axel Gnos was 28th overall.

The three G4 Racing drivers will be back in action for the second qualifying session and race 2 tomorrow.
